Untangled by Lisa Damour is a book every parent of a teen girl needs to own. It is amazing! There are a lot of books you can just read once, but this one is worth owning and rereading often as your teen grows.

The book explains that there are seven transitions girls go through as they become adults. They will go through them at different rates, but all will go through them. The stages are:

  1. Parting With Childhood

  2. Joining a New Tribe

  3. Harnessing Emotions

  4. Contending with Adult Authority

  5. Planning for the Future

  6. Entering the Romantic World

  7. Caring for Herself

She goes into great detail about each one, even including a “When to Worry” section. Here are a few interesting quotes from the book.

“Believe me, girls know when they’re stepping over a boundary and find it strange when adults seem not to notice.”

”Girls can roll their eyes and listen at the same time.” Love this!

“It is better for your daughter to be safe than for her friends to think you’re cool.”

“Psychological discomfort is an amazing thing. It not only helps teenagers make good decisions, it sparks maturation.”

“When feelings are minimized, girls often turn up the volume to make sure they, are their feelings, are heard.”

“They aren’t just misbehaving. They are scared. They are looking for reassurance that adults will keep things under control. They will keep looking if they don’t get it.”
